Eliza Leslie was born in Philadelphia, and spent part of her childhood in England. After returning to America, she became famous for her cookbooks, and her popular works on housekeeping and manners were well-regarded and widely used. She also wrote fiction and edited The Gift. Henry Peterson was born and lived most of his life in Philadelphia. He wrote for the Saturday gazette, then in 1848, with partner Edmund Deacon, became publisher and editor of The Saturday evening post.
